BODY ON ROCKS

NORTERN DAILY MAIL, HARTLEPOOL
NOVEMEMBER 16, 1901.
INQUEST AT HARTLEPOOL
BODY FOUND ON ROCKS.
Mr.Coronor Bell last night held an inquest on the body of a young man, which was found on the rocks near the Old Pier, Hartlepool on the previous day.
Andrew Boagey, fisherman and Hunter Boagey, pilot spoke to finding the body whilst looking about amongst wreckage that had washed on the rocks near the Old Pier.
In the course of their evidence they stated that during the storm a number of people had crowded on the Pier and deceased might have fallen off.
George Richardson, lodging-house keeper, Cleveland St. stated that he believed the body to be that of a man who lodged at his house for three days a fortnight ago.
When he left he said he was going to Sunderland.
He gave the name of Wilson.
Asked by the coroner if he knew whether Wilson was “Hard up” he replied he didn’t, but that was a common compliant of men of his class.
P.C Potter gave evidence to assisting in the removal of the body to the Mortuary.
He saw that the neck was dislocated and there were several cuts and bruises about the face and head.
Asked what efforts he had made to obtain identification of the body, witness stated
It had been seen by survivors of the Dauntless and Trio but they were satisfied that it was not a member of the crew of either vessel.
There was nothing in the pockets of the deceased’s clothing and the only clue as to his identity was that furnished by the witness Richardson.
The jury found that there was not sufficient evidence to establish the man’s identity nor to how he met his death.
