GRAINGER, BURNS AND BOAGEY FAMILIES by OLWYN HART.

GRAINGER – BURNS - BOAGEY

GRAINGER FAMILY

Ann Grainger, 1832-1901.
Ann was born in Fylingdales, Robin Hoods Bay 16.11.1832. The second daughter of Margaret (nee Pearson) and Zachariah Granger, and was christened on 21.9.1834. The first daughter was her sister Margaret, 1827-1863.

1841 CENSUS FISHER HEAD ROBIN HOODS BAY
Grainger Margaret, Head, 40
Margaret, dau. 20
Ann, dau. 5
The ages on this census are obviously incorrect?
Zachariah must have been at sea.

1851 CENSUS 20 FISHERHEADS ROBIN HOODS BAY
Zachariah 51
Margaret 53

1851 CENSUS 54 FISHERHEADS ROBIN HOODS BAY
Margaret Granger, 23 Head
William, son 2, Richard son, 6m.
Ann, sister, 18
Ann must have been staying with them whilst Margaret’s husband Richard was at sea.
Margaret was a Granger - who married a Grainger.

1860
Ann, (28) gave birth to her first son Robert Henderson Grainger (illegitimate) 19.12.1860, at Church Street, Hartlepool.
Church Street was the Easterly leg of what is now the patch of green called Manners St. i.e. the leg farthest from the churchyard wall – as shown on the 1857/1896 maps – behind the former Prissick Schools.  There was also a Church Street in West Hartlepool.

1861 CENSUS CHURCH STREET HARTLEPOOL
There were several Grainger families living in Hartlepool/West Hartlepool from RHB in the 1861 Census, but none in Church Street.

1861 CENSUS APRIL 12 THE SQUARE ROBIN HOODS BAY
Ann 29
Parents, Zachariah, 69 & Margaret 64.
Sister Margaret 34, husband Richard 37,
Their children, William Pearson (Deaf and Dumb from birth) 13,
Richard, son, 11, and daughter Margaret, 7.
John, son aged 3 months.
There is a question as to whether the son John aged 3 months was actually Robert Henderson, Ann’s son, but this is doubtful – Free BMD shows a John Granger b. Q1, 1861, registered at Whitby, and the only baby John Granger in the 1861 Census is probably the same one, Richard’s son.  The baby appears to have died aged 5mth, and was buried in St Stephen’s churchyard, RHB on 16th June 1861.
But where was Robert Henderson who would have been 4 months old? Was he left in Hartlepool, or cosy in a crib, and deliberately omitted from the census?  After all, if you took only one baby out at a time, swathed in shawls, with only one month between them, who would know the difference? What a challenging time Ann must have experienced.
There were some Grainger’s living in Hartlepool on the 1861 census who came from Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby, but perhaps that is for further research.

1863
Ann’s sister Margaret 35 died, (buried 21 April, St. Stephen’s RHB).

1864
Ann gave birth to second son William (illegitimate) 22 April 1864 (at 79 Northgate Street, Hartlepool, in the house which is just about where the entrance to the Library building is now. The birth was registered 28 April 1864.
*We have not seen evidence that Wm. and Robert were full brothers. There is an equal or greater chance of them being just half-brothers.
Robert’s middle name Henderson, could give the impression that his father’s surname was Henderson, which research could lead to many theories, a few of them being:-
Robert Henderson, Blacksmith (California area) of Hartlepool with a son Robert Henderson.
Robert Henderson, Lay Preacher
Robert Henderson living in RHB, also Whitby.
Several travelling men, named Robert Henderson.
Further research may be of interest.
William’s birth and name has not led us to any theories. Well not today, but perhaps in 1864 it did.
Except to think that William and Robert may have had the same father.
Suffice it to say that Ann was a stoical, hard working lady, who brought up her sons despite all odds. The fact that Robert Henderson and his wife were witnesses at William and Biddy’s wedding suggests that there was a bond between them.

“‘The Margaret and Ann’ which went to sea on the morning of 20th February is believed to have foundered or been capsized in the great gale which swept the North Sea early on Sunday week”. She was commanded by Tom Shaw. Crew on board; David Burns, Christopher Smith, J. Bassam and T. Frost, (all married) and a young man named Climers.  *The date of Sunday week was probably Sunday 22nd February 1885.

Biddy came from Easky, County Sligo; family lore suggested it was during the potato famine, but as that was 1845-52, long before Biddy was even born, that cannot be so. Bridget was the daughter of linen weaver (not manufacturer), James Fox, (deceased).

It is a great shame that Ann did not live to witness  her son Wlliam’s  bravery in the rescue event that took place the November following her death. How proud she would have been to see her son who came from humble beginnings, receive the Sea Gallantry Medal and a Gold medal from the people of Hartlepool.

After 55 years bringing up their family and striving through what must have been quite difficult times together, William must have been heartbroken to lose Biddy, and seemingly just could not live without her.

DIFFERENT FAMILY EVENTS IN 1891
  • Boagey, Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) born in Pump Street.
  • Grainger, Florence, dau. of Robert and Ann born.
  • Grainger, William David (Davy) son of William and Biddy born.
  • Burns Ann (Grainger) 58, widow of David Burns is living with the Burton family in Wood Street.
  • Grainger, William 25, and Biddy 23, are living in George Street.
  • Grainger, Robert 30 and Ann 24 are living on Town Wall.

To put the locations into perspective:
Pump Street was behind York Place.
George Street and Wood Street were next to each other just along from Rowell Street.
Town Wall.
All were very near to each other.

It is of interest that both towns had a combined population of 64,000 in 1891, and well over 80,000 by 1901, having grown from about 1,600 in just sixty years.

*Note
Research has proven that family lore should come with a hazard warning. Take only in small doses, but certainly not without checking the facts. If a loved one or revered ancestor has made a statement, it is nice to cherish, however it may not always be true.
